Inadequate vitamin D status increases the risk for osteoporosis, falls and fractures. More recently vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increase risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and multiple other chronic conditions. A daily intake greater than the currently recommended 400 IU is needed to assure vitamin D adequacy.
