Blog Post: Thank You

February 22, 2022

By Pastor Jeff Fox-Kline

Thank you.

Thank you all so much.

If the news has not reached you yet, this Sunday will be my last Sunday at Covenant Presbyterian Church. As of February 28th, I will no longer be a pastor here.

This has been a very bittersweet time for me. After two years of a pandemic, this is going to be a time of rest and recuperation. I don’t know if you know this, but the past two years have not been easy for most people. I’ll get some time to dig into the whole ‘parenthood’ thing that I love so much, I’ll get to breathe and discern. I’ll get to explore and learn.

That’s the sweet, but the obvious bitter is that I will miss you tremendously.

Yes, you.

Thank you.

Thank you for showing me kindness and love, for demonstrating the grace of Jesus Christ that we are supposed to show to each other.

Thank you for laughing at my jokes, even (especially) when they didn’t deserve it.

Thank you for listening to my sermons and thank you especially for those times when you make them a dialogue. Thank you for remembering sermons and surprising me by referencing them long after they were done (this may be the biggest compliment a person can give a sermon).

Thank you for trusting me with your vulnerability and heartbreak. Thank you for letting me into your hospital rooms, your gravesides, your homes. Thank you for the trust that you placed to allow me to journey alongside you in the pain. This is an honor that I will never forget, and I can’t thank you enough.

Thank you for telling me about the good news in your lives. Thank you for sharing pictures of your grandchildren or great grandchildren. Thank you for letting me baptize your child. Thank you for telling me about new jobs or new directions. Thank you for telling me the stories of your childhood and helping me to understand how you became the awesome person you are.

Thank you to all of those who have moved away over the past five years. Thank you for letting me be a part of your story or your family’s story as you embark on new adventures. I hope you’re doing well and that wherever you are you feel blessed.

Thank you to the families of those who have died over the past years. For those whom I served at your memorial, thank you for your witness and ministry. Thank you for sharing your life with me for the small sliver we had together. Thank you to the families who shared memories and reflections. I hope you know that you are not alone, that you go with a God who loves you, and I will carry you and your loved ones in my heart.

Thank you for dreaming with me. Thank you for looking at the world and saying “what if…” Thank you for listening for God and sharing what you hear with others. Thank you for the reminders of God’s desire for justice and peace. Thank you for your visions of what it is to learn together and for how we use that learning in our lives. Thank you for thinking about what it means to be the church, and then actually doing it. Thank you for listening to my half-baked ideas and making them be reality. Thank you for coming to me with a half-baked idea in the confidence that God will lead us to make something real.

Thank you for working with me, for sharing your ministry with me. Thank you for designing flyers, opening my office when I locked my keys in there, for formatting blogs to make them interesting to read, for thinking about how to bring the gospel to life with our youth, for helping our children to know that God loves them, for bringing prayer to life through song, for playing music together, for vacuuming my office and never saying anything about the crumbs, for preaching together, leading together. Thank you for being my colleagues and thank you for being my friends.

Thank you for recommending books, tv shows, parenting tips, music, or activities. Thank you for being interested in my life, and for asking about my family.

Thank you for reading my blogs, even the really dumb ones. Thank you for being patient enough to wait for there to be one that says anything of substance. Thank you for liking it on Facebook or sharing with me that you read it. We started this blog with about 5 people reading it, and now that we have a few more folks, I thank you for taking a moment to walk with me through my reflections.

Thank you for laughing at my terrible jokes (that one needs to be restated).

Thank you for the emails, texts, Facebook messages, letters, and phone calls you’ve been sending me the past few days. If I haven’t responded to you yet, please know that I’m working on it, but I had to write a blog first. Thank you for the words and prayers, they will be inscribed on my heart and will serve as encouragement and joy while I discern whatever may be next.

Thank you for everything. Thank you so much.

I don’t like to repeat myself, but I think the last line of my blog from last week needs to be said here too:

I love you all.

Grace and peace be with you all and thank you for being a partner in this wonderful ministry.
